Scholarship Funding Principles and Targets
The scholarships are mainly used to support short-term study abroad programs and study tours to China jointly established by the university and universities or educational institutions of countries along the "Belt and Road".

Scholarships
Ø Category A Scholarship recipients are exempted from tuition fees and are provided with monthly living expenses (RMB 1,100/month for undergraduates and advanced students, RMB 1,400/month for master's degree holders, and RMB 1,700/month for doctoral degree holders) for the duration of their study, and are required to pay for the application fee for the registration and scholarships, the accommodation fee during the period of study, and the comprehensive medical insurance fee on their own.
Ø Category B Scholarship recipients are exempted from tuition fee, but they have to pay the application fee, accommodation fee and comprehensive medical insurance fee during the period of study by themselves.
Ø Scholarship recipients of short-term study tours to China are exempted from paying tuition, accommodation, comprehensive medical insurance and cultural tour fees during the period of study, and are provided with living expenses.
Scholarship Period and Annual Evaluation
Recipients of this scholarship are entitled to the scholarship according to the study period of 4 academic years for full-time undergraduates, 2-3 academic years for master's degree students and 3 academic years for doctoral degree students, and those who have exceeded the study period are no longer entitled to this scholarship.
In order to give full play to the incentive function of the scholarship, the annual evaluation system of the scholarship will be implemented with reference to the relevant provisions of the annual evaluation of the Chinese Government Scholarship and other scholarships. In May every year, the university will conduct an annual evaluation of the scholarship students and decide whether they will continue to enjoy the scholarship or whether to adjust the level of the scholarship according to the results of the annual evaluation. For short-term study tours to China, students must complete the required study tasks before they can obtain the study certificate.
Application Requirements
Ø Non-Chinese citizens who are physically and mentally healthy
Ø Academic qualifications and age requirements for long-term program applicants:
-Applicants for bachelor's degree in undergraduate programs must have the equivalent of senior secondary school graduation and be no older than 30 years old;
-Applicants applying for a degree in the Master's program must have a Bachelor's degree and be no older than 35 years old;
-Applicants for doctoral programs must have a master's degree and be no older than 40 years old;
Ø Language proficiency requirements for applicants for long-term programs:
-Applicants who apply for Chinese as the language of instruction must have a Chinese language level of HSK Level 4 180 points or above (except for applicants majoring in Chinese language).
-For applicants whose language of instruction is English, they must have IELTS 6.0 or above or TOEFL 80 or above.
Ø Those who have been awarded Chinese Government Scholarships, Confucius Institute Scholarships, Chinese Local Government Scholarships and various scholarships from Chinese universities and organizations and enterprises are not eligible to apply for this scholarship.
Ø Applicants for short-term (two-week) study tours to China should be students, native Chinese teachers or managers from educational institutions in the countries along the "Belt and Road" with which the university has established cooperative relationships. Applicants are not subject to age and language requirements.
Ø Application and Admission Procedures
A. Traditional Application
Ø From the website http://gjxy.swu.edu.cn下载专区或者联系西南大学外国学生招生办公室获取 "Application Form of "New Silk Road" Scholarship for Foreign Students" and "Record of Physical Examination for Foreigners";
Ø Fill in the form of "Record of Physical Examination for Foreigners" and have a physical examination at the local public hospital. Applicants should strictly follow the items in the form. Forms with missing items, no photo of the applicant or no riding seal on the photo, and no signature and seal of the physician and hospital are invalid. The examination results are valid for six months;
Ø Prepare other required documents and then mail all the application materials to the Office of Foreign Student Admission of Southwest University;
B. Online Application
Ø Visit the online admission application website http://issic.swu.edu.cn and complete the user registration.
Ø Download and fill in the form of "Record of Physical Examination of Foreigners" and have a physical examination at the local public hospital. Applicants should strictly follow the items required in the form. Forms with missing items, no photo of the applicant or no riding seal on the photo, and no signature and seal of the physician and the hospital are invalid. The examination results are valid for six months;
Ø Login to enter the online application system, fill in the application information as required and upload the required application materials;
Ø Confirm that the information and uploaded materials are accurate and click submit;
Evaluation for Admission:
Ø Southwestern University will review the application materials and after passing the application will be posted on the website http://gjxy.swu.edu.cn上发布录取学生名单 and the applicant will be notified in person via email;
Ø Scholarship recipients pay the scholarship application fee of RMB500 to Southwest University (relevant bank information attached);
Ø Southwest University will send the "Letter of Acceptance" and "Visa Application Form" (Form JW202) to the admitted students before the end of June or December every year.
Application Materials
Ø Two copies of "New Silk Road Scholarship for Foreign Students" from Southwest University (please do not write by hand).
Ø A copy of the highest education certificate, diploma or degree certificate. If the applicant is a student or employed, he/she should submit a certificate of enrollment issued by his/her school or a certificate of employment issued by his/her employer. A notarized translation of the documents in Chinese or English must be attached to the documents other than Chinese or English in duplicate.
Ø Transcripts: complete transcripts of the previous study period; the notarized Chinese or English translation must be attached to the text other than Chinese or English, in duplicate.
Ø Study in China (undergraduates) / research plan (master's and doctoral students) of not less than 800 words.
Ø Recommendation letters from two professors or associate professors in the country of residence in duplicate (signed in person with workplace and contact information; this is only applicable to master's degree and doctoral degree students).
Ø Documents proving language proficiency: a copy of HSK certificate (if any) for Chinese-taught majors; a copy of IELTS or TOEFL certificate for English-taught majors (official language not including English).
Ø Publicly published academic papers, patents or other research results (if any, please provide the originals or photocopies)
Ø Two copies of "Foreigner's Physical Examination Record" (please keep the original for visa application)
Ø 2 passport photos (please write the applicant's name and the name of the program of study on the back of the photos)
Ø Photocopy of passport (valid ordinary passport)
Remarks:
1. Students applying for the Music and Fine Arts programs are required to submit two copies of their own works on CD-ROM;
2. Students applying for English-medium programs should complete all the above materials (including application form, recommendation letter, study plan, etc.) in English.
