Scholarship Details

I. Brief description of the plan

The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (ASD) have established the "Dean's Scholarship Program between the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (ASD)" in order to cultivate talents from developing countries and to enhance the capacity of developing countries for scientific and technological innovation and regional development in accordance with the agreement between CAS and ASD.

II. Content and Criteria of Funding

1. Scholarship students are exempted from tuition fees during their study period.

2. Scholarship students will receive financial support for living expenses (including accommodation, food, insurance, transportation and other related expenses) after enrollment at the rate of RMB 7,000 per month before passing the doctoral qualification examination and RMB 8,000 per month after passing it. For those who fail to pass two consecutive doctoral qualification examinations organized by the International College of NUST within the specified period, they will be exempted from the status of Dean's Scholarship and terminated from doctoral study in accordance with the relevant regulations.

3. The one-way international travel expenses incurred by the scholarship student from his/her home country to China for the first time must be applied by the student himself/herself to the Scholarship Office of NUST and will be subsidized according to the relevant agreement between CAS and the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (ASD) after the approval of the Scholarship Office. Scholarship students must submit their applications before the travel expenses are actually incurred. If the Scholar is in China at the time of application for the Scholarship Program, his/her travel expenses will not be supported. Each scholarship student can only be granted travel support once during his/her study period.

4. Visa fees for the first visit to China will also be subsidized in accordance with the relevant agreement. If the Scholar is in China at the time of application, the visa fee will not be supported. Each scholarship student can only receive one visa fee subsidy during his/her study period.

III. Period of Sponsorship

The duration of the Scholarship Program will not exceed 4 years and the study will be conducted in stages:

1. Completion of centralized training and course study at NUS, with a cumulative maximum of 1 year, including about 4 months of Chinese language, Chinese culture courses and specialized courses;

2. Participate in scientific research practice and complete the dissertation at the training unit (institute/department).

IV. Application Requirements

1. Born on or after January 1, 1983 (inclusive);

2. Non-Chinese nationality;

3. Meet the conditions for international student enrollment at NUST;

4. Have earned a master's degree or can earn one by September 2018

5. Be fluent in English or Chinese;

6. Guarantee to study full-time during the period of funding of this program and not to engage in other employment;

7. Guarantee to return to China to serve upon completion of their studies.

Notes:

1. Those who are already studying for a doctoral degree in China are not allowed to apply for this program.

2. Applicants may not apply for this program through both NUST and USTC at the same time.

3. Applicants are not allowed to apply for this program through two (or more) training units at the same time.

Applicants shall not apply for the program through two (or more) supervisors at the same time.

V. Application Procedures and Materials

1. The applicant determines that he/she is eligible to apply, contacts and is accepted by one of the mentors at NUST.

4. Application Materials:

Scanned copy of personal information page of ordinary passport (passport must be valid for at least 2 years);

Curriculum Vitae (must include a brief description of research experience);

Record of foreigner's physical examination;

Proof of master's and bachelor's degree;

If the applicant is a student, he/she has to submit the certificate of pre-graduation in school issued by the school he/she is attending, which has to be submitted after obtaining the degree certificate.

Transcripts of the master's and bachelor's degree period;

Certificate of English or Chinese language proficiency;

Detailed research plan;

Scanned copies of the titles and copies of the first pages of up to five representative published academic papers (if any), please do not provide unpublished papers;

Two independent letters of recommendation.
